It’s that time of year again. A season of shifting, the air cooling and changing, and a time where we begin to look back on the year and count our blessings. Being thankful is something we can do all year round, but it’s around this time that I start thinking about the things I am most thankful for.
Earlier in the year, I made it a goal to write down things I’m thankful for (every day, originally.) Now it happens every Sunday afternoon, summarizing seven things I’m thankful for from that week. More specifically, I would like you and I to focus on the simple things. They are the things easily overlooked, dismissed, or drowned out. Things that bring a little spark of joy into your life in this season. It can be anything. A warm sweater. The smell of pumpkin pie wafting from the kitchen. The crunch of leaves under your feet. Take the time to stop and take in your surroundings. What has made you stop and count your blessings? The last two days here in northeastern Pennsylvania have been rainy and gloomy. Yeah, not my cup of tea, but in these darker days, I’ve noticed something amazing happen. I stopped and looked around, taking note of some (sad to say) otherwise unnoticed blessings. Of all the things I could be grateful for, it was peas. Yes, you read that right. There I was, cupping up peas on a rainy autumn morning, when their bright green color popped out at me. It was refreshing to see their bright color. They captured my eyes' and my heart’s attention. In those moments, I grew grateful for, not only vision, but for the colors God created. Colors that could stand out. Colors that I haven’t even seen yet, nor can imagine, until my faith becomes sight. Today was more of the same dark, foul weather, but I was determined to remain happy despite the gloomy outlook. Today I was grateful for laughter. There’s just something about it that gets your “happy juices” flowing, and you can’t stop smiling. It came unexpectedly, too, and hit at just the right moment, creating a memory I’ll treasure. Whether it’s peas, a cozy blanket, a description of how potato smiles are ‘made’, or those warm cinnamon-scented candles, take a moment and stop to count your blessings. No blessing is too small or too simple, but just right. Why? Because every gift and every blessing comes from our Heavenly Father, who, thankfully, never changes. He is ever and always will be the same God. Hey, isn’t that a blessing? “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17)
